SEO Keywords
The topic that we are going to discuss here is “Generic Keywords vs. Specific Keywords for your SEO Campaign”
This is common mistake of most business owners: “The more general the keyword is, the higher traffic they can get.”
It is not the fact. Just because a keyword is very popular, doesn’t mean it’s valuable to your business.
When you are marketing yourself with general SEO keywords, you might attract a lot of traffic but you might also experience a lot of “touch-n-go” clicks where people find your website is not what they are looking for. This will not bring any credibility to you in your SEO campaign.
Let me show you a very simple example. Let’s say you are going for a backpack travel and is looking for a hotel. When you start your search in search engine, i.e. Google or Yahoo, what will you type? Would you type a singular word, “Hotel”? If yes, you then will see a list of result comprising the definition of “hotel” in Wikipedia, hotel association, non-profit organization etc. These are not the result you are looking for. You then refine your search by typing, say “Hotel in Cambodia”. Again it displays the whole list of hotels, in wide variety. It might be, or might not be the results you are looking for. If you already know what you need exactly, for example “backpacker guest house in Cambodia, you might as well key in that rather than go through refine search, level by level. And you are more likely interested in the result of “Cambodia Backpacker Guest House” compared to “Hotels in Cambodia” or “Hotel” right?
The same search behavior is applied to most of the searchers, so do your clients.
Research shown that the most effective SEO keyword should be a phrase consisting 2-4 singular words. See http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Choosing-Keywords-Help/Keyword-Research-Tips/ .
Give you a better example that might relate to your industry. If you are running a company that manufacturer plastic container and doing your SEO campaign; what are keywords he probably choose? I guess you will be excited if you are found high at the top when people looking for “plastics”? However, when a searcher is looking for plastics, does he looking for plastic container? Or does he looking for plastic container manufacturer? In the other hand, when you consultant suggesting “plastic container manufacturer” you might worry that no one search for that phrase. You do not have to worry about it. If your supplier is suggesting a keyword that no one searches, then they have no hope on your renewal!
But, if a customer really find you through the keyword “ plastic container manufacturer”, then you can be pretty sure this lead is genuine. I believe you do not want to spend time filtering unwanted enquiries.
So let the big numbers wool over your eyes. Concentrate on keywords that produce qualified leads and conversions. That’s what all expert SEOs do. Resist the high-traffic keywords and go for the ones that will get you business!
